We're on New York's East Side: the protagonist, Colleen Moore, plays Mary, a working-class girl who owns a lunch wagon and dreams of mingling with high society. When the scion of a wealthy family, having just been mugged, stumbles into view, she takes him for one of the lunch wagon's down-and-out customers, and a hesitant relationship begins. Later, with the encouragement of her friends, Mary spends her precious savings on a visit to a fashionable resort, where she ends up trying to masquerade as a Duchess. Needless to say, the poor girl in disguise soon crosses paths with the rich boy. The ensuing complications and misunderstandings were already familiar conventions of romantic comedy by 1927. But, as always, what matters is not so much the material as how the material is presented on the screen. Her Wild Oat is the work of professionals: Marshall Neilan keeps the complications moving with wit and grace, and Moore and the other cast members acquit themselves with expert comic timing.
